Prolonged Identification of Fallen Ukrainian Defenders

18 June 2025

The identification of approximately 6,000 bodies of fallen Ukrainian defenders, transferred by the Russian side, may take at least 13-14 months.

This was announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, Igor Klymenko, during a national telethon.

How long will the identification of 6000 defenders take?

The minister noted that the Russian side has handed over a total of 6060 bodies of the deceased.

“I can only provide a rough estimate of the situation, as the analysis is still ongoing – regarding the condition of the remains and how many are actually in the packages sent to us by the Russian side. However, according to the most conservative preliminary estimates from our experts, identifying these approximately 6,000 bodies will require at least 13-14 months,” said Igor Klymenko.

He also emphasized that this timeframe is the minimum needed for complete identification of all repatriated bodies.

According to him, to expedite this extremely complex and important task, all relevant services – forensic examination, expert units, and investigators – are working in three shifts.
