Clarification on School Holidays: A Closer Look

17 April 2025

Recently, social media and news outlets circulated claims that the government had supposedly shortened the school holidays for students in 2025.

The Ministry of Education and Science labeled these claims as "false" and clarified that each school determines the length of the academic year individually.

They acknowledged that according to the Cabinet's resolution, the academic year lasts from September 2, 2024, to June 30, 2025. However, these dates are merely guidelines and not mandatory completion dates.

"The date, as well as the structure of the academic year, holidays, and so forth, are determined not by the government but by the schools themselves. This is not a new policy; such flexibility has been provided by existing legislation for many years, even before the full-scale war," they added.

In fact, schools have the autonomy to decide when to conclude the academic year for their students.

While making this decision, the pedagogical council considers:

  • the overall educational workload;
  • the security situation in the region;
  • the individual needs of students;
  • the readiness of teachers.
