Honoring an Artist: A New Star on Odessa's Walk of Fame
On September 2, a memorial star was ceremoniously unveiled on the Walk of Fame in downtown Odessa to honor Gennady Vasilyevich Garmider — a prominent Odessa graphic artist who left a profound impact on the art world.
This event is part of the celebrations for the artist's 80th anniversary, which will take place in 2025.
“Every name on this Walk is a piece of Odessa’s identity. These are the individuals who shaped our city. Today, on City Day, we continue to tell the story of Odessa through those who created it,” emphasized Odessa’s mayor Gennady Trukhanov.
Gennady Garmider worked in oil painting and etching, producing city landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and illustrating over 200 books. His famous graphic series — “Odessa in the Early 19th Century,” “Odessa and the French,” “Theater and the City” — have become icons of the city.
This year, numerous events were held in Odessa to celebrate Gennady Garmider: the exhibition “Multifaceted Gennady Garmider” at the Museum of Western and Eastern Art, a monograph album presentation at the National Scientific Library, and thematic exhibitions at the Literature Museum and the O.V. Bleschunov Museum of Personal Collections.
