Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile Launch European Satellite Network Initiative

On Friday, Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile revealed their plans to create a new satellite network aimed at providing communication between satellites and smartphones for both commercial and governmental needs. According to Reuters, the operational center for this satellite initiative will be based in Germany, with potential locations near Munich or Hanover being considered.
This initiative will be overseen by a joint venture of the two companies.
The satellite service providers aim to offer mobile connectivity, addressing the growing demand for broadband internet in underserved areas.
As per the Paris-based consulting firm Novaspace, the satellite communication market with phones could exceed $10 billion by 2033.
The German center will facilitate communication for mobile network operators across Europe, enhancing broadband services, population protection, and disaster relief efforts, according to Vodafone and AST.
The satellite network will feature a “command switch” for monitoring and security, including communication encryption and satellite oversight across Europe, they added.
Commercial operations of the satellite network are slated to begin in 2026.
Vodafone CEO Margherita Della Valle stated in a press release that this “sovereign satellite solution” will provide European operators with access to secure satellite communications that complement terrestrial networks.
