Customs Officials Prevent Export of Historical Books

Odesa customs officials have thwarted an attempt to illegally export two valuable books from the 19th and early 20th centuries out of Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the Odesa customs.
The incident occurred at the ‘Reni-Jurjulesht’ crossing point. During the inspection of a bus heading to Bulgaria, customs officers discovered a complete collection of works by German poets Friedrich Schiller, printed in 1883, and Eduard Mörike, published in 1904, in the suitcase of a Ukrainian citizen.
Customs officials noted that the stamps on the books suggest they were likely part of the collection at the Odesa Regional Universal Scientific Library named after M.S. Grushevsky.
“This library is one of the largest in Odesa, established in 1875. It even operated during the German occupation in World War II, as evidenced by a Romanian language stamp,” the message states.
The books have been seized due to customs violations, and an examination will determine their cultural and historical significance.
