Natural Gas Reserves in Ukraine Hit New Heights

As of September 14, 2025, natural gas reserves in Ukraine's underground storage facilities have for the first time this year exceeded last year's figures, reaching 12.055 billion cubic meters.

This is reported by the specialized publication ExPro.

On this date, Ukrainian underground storage held 12.055 billion cubic meters of natural gas, whereas on September 14, 2024, the storage contained only 12.05 billion cubic meters, which is 0.05% or nearly 5 million cubic meters less.

The gap is expected to widen in the coming days.

The publication reminded that at the beginning of this year's injection season (April 17), about 5.41 billion cubic meters of natural gas were stored in Ukrainian underground storage, which is 35% or 2.95 billion cubic meters less than on the same date in 2024. Throughout the injection season, Ukraine managed to completely close this gap, primarily due to increased imports.

Since the start of the injection season, nearly 6.68 billion cubic meters of gas have been injected into Ukrainian underground storage, which is 1.67 times more than in 2024. Additionally, more gas has been stored in 2025 than was present at the end of the heating season.

In September 2025, Ukraine is injecting an average of 53.9 million cubic meters of natural gas into storage daily, which is 2.3 times more than in September 2024. About half of the injection volume consists of imported resources.

The average daily import volume in September is 23.6 million cubic meters, almost entirely provided by the state-owned company Naftogaz of Ukraine.

It is worth noting that the filling level of European underground gas storage facilities reached 80% (86 billion cubic meters of natural gas) on September 13-14. This is the lowest filling level in the EU since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, although this year's reserves are higher than in 2021.
