Conservation of Rare Species: New Ducklings Discovered in Odesa Region

16 July 2025

In the Odesa region, within the territory of the national park «Tuzlivski Lymany», seven broods of the rare grey duck known as the northern shoveler, listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, have been observed. This indicates favorable conditions for the breeding of this species. The information was shared by national park staff member Ivan Rusev.

Key Highlights:

  • Seven pairs of northern shovelers with ducklings were recorded in the national park
  • This species is protected and included in the Red Book of Ukraine

Why Birds Chose the Odesa Region

Seven pairs of northern shovelers (Anas strepera) with ducklings were spotted in the floodplains and dense reeds of the area known as «Tuzlivska Amazonia» within the national park. This waterfowl species is rarely seen in Ukraine and is legally protected.

Experts from the national park emphasize that the northern shoveler is an exceptionally cautious bird. It is nearly impossible to photograph: when threatened, the female hides, and the ducklings quickly scatter into the reeds. This complicates observation but confirms that the area remains safe for their breeding.

The presence of northern shoveler ducklings signifies the crucial role of the Tuzlivski Lymany in conserving biodiversity. According to park specialists, these wetlands are among the most valuable in Ukraine, particularly in light of climate change and human activity.
