New Vaccine Doses Against Hepatitis B Arrive in Odesa Region
The Odesa region has received 1600 doses of hepatitis B vaccine intended for the free immunization of at-risk adults. The vaccine has already been delivered to the regional center for disease control and prevention, as reported by the institution.
Distribution of the vaccines among medical facilities in Odesa is currently underway.
Overall, Ukraine has received 37,500 doses of hepatitis B vaccine as part of the collaboration between the Ministry of Health and the humanitarian organization Project HOPE Polska.
Why Hepatitis B Vaccination is Important: Medical Experts' Opinion
Hepatitis B is a serious viral infection that affects the liver and can lead to chronic illness, cirrhosis, or cancer. Chronic hepatitis B is incurable; however, vaccination prevents infection in over 90% of cases, and protection lasts at least 20 years, sometimes for life.
Newborns are at the highest risk, as 90% of early-age infections develop into chronic forms. This is why hepatitis B vaccination is included in the National Vaccination Calendar and is provided free of charge.
Priority vaccination groups for adults include healthcare workers, military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, social service staff, and patients and personnel in closed facilities (such as psychiatric hospitals) and other at-risk groups.
In Ukraine, children receive vaccinations against ten dangerous diseases, including hepatitis B. According to the Ukrainian Public Health Center, as of July 1, 2025, 5,590 Ukrainians were receiving treatment for viral hepatitis B, including 125 children.
This shipment is part of a joint project by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and Project HOPE Ukraine aimed at strengthening immunoprophylaxis and protecting the population from infectious diseases.
