Enhancing Barrier-Free for Patients: New Initiatives

Ophthalmologists have approached the Barrier-Free Council under the Odesa Mayor with a proposal to support the Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy in implementing barrier-free solutions on its premises. This involves setting up pedestrian areas with tactile paving, creating accessible navigation, and adding information in Braille — all of which are critically important for patients with visual impairments. 

«I will bring this issue to the attention of the deputies, as the Filatov Institute is not just a medical facility. It is a research center with over a century of history, operating under the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Its contribution to the development of ophthalmology is recognized not only in Ukraine but also beyond its borders. We will definitely find ways to assist», said Odesa Mayor Hennadiy Trukhanov. 

Every day, the clinic serves around 500 patients, including civilians, children, persons with disabilities, and military personnel who receive high-quality care. 

Previously, work has been done on the section of French Boulevard near the institution to repair sidewalks and install traffic lights. 

«The next logical step should be the establishment of a fully barrier-free environment that meets the institution's status and the needs of its patients», noted the mayor's advisor on accessibility, Oleksiy Morozov.
