Windows 11 Update: Embracing AI Innovations
Microsoft has announced a significant update for Windows 11, introducing a fresh approach to artificial intelligence within the operating system. This new direction is termed "agent-based OS," allowing AI agents to perform tasks, interact with files, and manage system components on behalf of the user.
According to The Verge, a key feature of this update is the AI agents present in the Windows 11 taskbar. They are activated through the Ask Copilot function, operate in the background, and display their status in a compact window. For instance, an agent can search for information, automate routine file operations, or handle tasks within Microsoft 365.
The integration is optional, giving users the ability to disable agents in the settings if they choose. Microsoft is also adding support for third-party AI agents, with the infrastructure based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to facilitate agent interaction with system tools through a managed registry.
AI agents will operate in a designated "workspace" – an isolated and controlled environment with separate Windows accounts for each agent. This setup is intended to enhance security and prevent AI errors from affecting the main system.
Additionally, Microsoft is expanding Copilot's implementation in system applications. In File Explorer, Copilot can summarize documents, answer queries about their content, or prepare draft emails based on files. For PCs, Copilot Plus's Click to Do feature will convert any seen table into an Excel document for further processing. Meanwhile, Word will introduce automatic alt-text generation for images, and Outlook will receive AI-generated summaries of correspondence.
