Google to Shut Down goo.gl Link Shortener

25 July 2025

In just one month, on August 25, 2025, Google will officially discontinue its goo.gl link shortening service. This announcement was made back in July 2024. After the shutdown, users will encounter a 404 / Not Found error instead of accessing webpage content.

For the past year, Google has been displaying an intermediary page warning that shortened links will soon cease to function. Visiting goo.gl will lead to a support page where the company elaborates on its decision.

In 2019, Google had already stopped supporting the Google URL Shortener tool, yet existing generated links continued to work until 2024, when the company declared that they would be disabled after a year, as over 99% of these links were no longer in use.

This decision is justified by the significant changes in how people discover content online and the emergence of many new popular URL shortening services.
