Innovative Laser Device for Long-Distance Text Reading
Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China have introduced an innovative laser device capable of reading fine text from distances exceeding one kilometer, as reported by BGR and the scientific journal Physical Review Letters. By utilizing active intensity interferometry, they overcame traditional limitations of optics and atmospheric disturbances.
Unlike standard cameras that collect light waves through lenses, this laser device employs multiple emitters to create pseudo-thermal illumination. Reflected laser beams are captured by two telescopes, and the data collected is processed by a specialized algorithm that enables the reconstruction of high-detail images.
In an experiment, scientists placed aluminum plates with cut letters 'USTC' measuring 8×9 mm at a distance of 1.36 km, with each letter's width being only 1.5 mm. The laser system successfully read the text, achieving a resolution that surpasses the theoretical limit of a single telescope by 14 times. The technology operates effectively even when the signal is weak or distorted, including due to weather conditions.
This development, while still in the research phase, holds significant potential for applications in remote sensing, contactless visualization in challenging conditions, and high-precision observation. In the future, it may become a vital tool for public safety and disaster monitoring.
