OpenAI's Vision: Creating a Next-Gen AI Assistant

02 June 2025

OpenAI is setting its sights on developing a "super assistant" that deeply comprehends user needs and serves as the primary interface for internet interactions. This information surfaced in documents related to the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust case against Google.

While a significant portion of the document has been redacted, it still reveals insights into OpenAI's ambitious goals. The company aims to transform how we engage with the internet by introducing a new AI interface.

The super assistant is described in the documents as an "intelligent entity with advanced capabilities". This agent is expected to be personalized for each user and accessible anywhere that ChatGPT is available. The term "advanced capabilities" indicates that it will handle "complex daily tasks".

As stated by OpenAI, the super assistant will be able to perform a variety of tasks: answering questions, finding housing, communicating with lawyers, signing up for gym memberships, planning vacations, purchasing gifts, managing calendars, maintaining to-do lists, sending emails, and much more.

The assistant is projected to be ready by the first half of 2025, marking the first public reference to such a tool. OpenAI has yet to make any official announcements regarding new products or agents, leading to speculation that the release timeline may need adjustment.

Additionally, the document mentions a "broader strategy" that could position ChatGPT to enter markets like search engines, browsers, and even operating systems. However, specifics remain unclear as a key term in that context was redacted.

"Then there is a broader strategy: creating the super assistant and then [REDACTED]. Now we are looking at search engines, browsers, even interactions with real people. This is not a direct confrontation. It’s about addressing more and more use cases and gradually engaging users. That’s why we don’t call our product a search engine, a browser, or an OS – it’s just ChatGPT," the document states.
