Wikipedia and Artificial Intelligence: New Horizons
Wikipedia is set to incorporate artificial intelligence not to replace human editors but to streamline technical processes. This was stated in a recent announcement by the Wikimedia Foundation, which outlines its strategy for AI implementation.
"The volunteer community is the cornerstone of Wikipedia's success. For nearly 25 years, editors have collaboratively built the largest encyclopedia ever created. Their commitment to accurate knowledge is something no technology can replicate," the statement reads.
With this approach, Wikipedia will begin using artificial intelligence to automate specific tasks, allowing more focus on critical areas where generative AI can excel. One of these areas will be content moderation, which will simplify routine tasks to maintain information integrity. AI will also enhance information accessibility, freeing up time for discussions and consensus-building.
Additionally, artificial intelligence will assist editors in sharing local perspectives by automating translation and topic adaptation. Another key goal is to facilitate the onboarding of new Wikipedia volunteers through guided mentorship.
