The End of Skype: What Comes Next?

05 May 2025

Today, May 5, 2025, the popular messaging app Skype, which existed for over two decades, has officially ceased operations.

This was confirmed by Jeff Teper, president of the apps and platforms division for collaboration at Microsoft, in an interview with CNBC.

Skype has officially shut down

Teper explained that the company decided to focus on developing its newer platform, Teams, which already incorporates many Skype features.

“We learned a lot from Skype, but it’s time to move on,” Teper stated in the CNBC interview.

Microsoft has encouraged Skype users to switch to Teams, where they can log in using their Skype credentials. Contacts and chat history will automatically transfer to the new system.

Users can also utilize their remaining Skype account balances in Teams. The sale of Skype subscriptions was halted earlier, and user data is available for export.

Skype: The Popular Messaging App's Legacy

Skype was a service that enabled communication for millions of users worldwide. Both individuals and businesses used Skype for free video and voice calls, instant messaging, and file sharing.

The service was accessible on various devices, including mobile phones, computers, and tablets, ensuring availability at any convenient location for users.

What is Microsoft Teams: The Successor to Skype

In light of Skype's official closure, Microsoft is actively promoting its communication platform, Microsoft Teams, as the main alternative and successor.

Microsoft Teams is a comprehensive communication platform that offers video chat, text chat, file sharing, and other communication capabilities. Teams is available for download on Windows, Mac, as well as iOS and Android devices.

A significant advantage of Teams is its integration with other applications via Microsoft AppSource, allowing the use of third-party apps.

Teams' collaborative features are designed not only for remote use but can also be applied during in-person meetings or hybrid learning formats, providing students with constant access to the same tasks and resources regardless of their location.

Educators can use Microsoft Teams to create a virtual “class team” where they can hold online meetings with students, teach lessons, organize class activities, post assignments, create tests, assess student work, and provide feedback.
