False Notifications Sent to Ukrainians in the USA
This week, some Ukrainians in the USA under a humanitarian program received emails containing incorrect information about the cancellation of their status.
According to Reuters, a portion of Ukrainians received an email stating that their status was revoked, giving them seven days to leave the country under threat of federal action.
The email warned: "If you do not leave the United States immediately, you may be subject to law enforcement actions leading to your removal. Your humanitarian status is revoked. Do not attempt to remain in the country."
However, on April 4, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security stated that the email was sent in error and that the program for Ukrainians remains active. It is unclear how many individuals received this notification.
On the same day, the Department sent a follow-up message confirming that "the conditions of your humanitarian status remain unchanged at this time."
It is important to note that in January, following Donald Trump's inauguration, the Department of Homeland Security suspended several programs that allowed migrants to temporarily reside in the United States, including a key initiative for Ukrainians.
