Inclusive Sports: New Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities in Odessa

14 November 2024

A significant focus of the Odessa city government is the organization of physical activities and sports rehabilitation for persons with disabilities, as well as improving the quality of life for veterans through their engagement in adaptive sports.

Under the City Target Program “Development of Physical Culture and Sports in Odessa from 2024 to 2027”, various sports and wellness activities are conducted for individuals with disabilities and war veterans who have made special contributions to their country.

One such event was the “Black Sea Cup” featuring wheelchair basketball. This tournament was collaboratively organized with the Odessa City Basketball Federation, where the team “Odessa-Basket” competed against two teams from the capital – “Kyiv Lions” and “Titans”.

Individuals with disabilities also have the opportunity to acquire memberships for access to sports facilities, including sports clubs, gyms, and swimming pools. This year, the Odessa City Council purchased 156 swimming pool memberships at the “Sports Academy” complex and 100 memberships for the fitness club network “GYM”.

In 2024, these memberships will be made available to persons with disabilities, including war veterans, participants of qualifying competitions, and competitors of the Invictus Games. A total of 78 individuals with disabilities, including 30 veterans, were provided pool memberships, while 30 individuals with disabilities were granted access to the fitness club, including 16 veterans.

For the upcoming year, there are plans to increase the budget allocated for ensuring access to sports facilities for individuals with disabilities.
