Students Connect Online with Antarctic Biologists

06 October 2025

Students from high school No. 56 in Odesa had the opportunity to engage online with scientists from the Ukrainian Antarctic station «Academician Vernadsky». This meeting provided a unique insight into the world of science and allowed them to hear firsthand about life on the icy continent. According to a report from Odesa High School 56,
a remarkable event took place at the school — students participated in a Zoom meeting with members of the 30th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition. Connecting live with Odesa were biologist Elizaveta Safonova, a native of the city, and her colleague Taras Peretiatko.
The polar scientists shared insights about the unique flora and fauna of the Argentine Islands, discussed the scientific research being conducted in Antarctica, and emphasized the importance of climate change issues for this region.
Students showed particular interest in the discussion about the daily lives of the polar researchers.
They learned how scientists live at the station, the challenges they face each day, and the discoveries they make during their expeditions.
The meeting concluded with an interactive «question-and-answer» session, where students received genuine responses to their inquiries and felt a sense of pride for the Ukrainian scientists representing their country in one of the most remote corners of the planet.
