U.S. to Provide Patriot Systems to Ukraine: A Strategic Shift

On Sunday, July 13, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States will provide Ukraine with Patriot missile defense systems. This marks a significant shift in the policy of his administration, which had previously halted new arms supplies during his second term.

Speaking to reporters at Andrews Base, Trump stated, "We are not paying anything for them. But we will provide them with the Patriots they desperately need."

He added, "I haven't finalized the number yet, but they will receive them because they need protection, and the European Union will cover the costs."

While Trump did not specify the exact number of Patriot systems to be sent, he emphasized their critical importance, reiterating that Ukraine would "pay us back 100 percent."

The President directly linked this decision to the ongoing military aggression by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin, stating, "Because Putin has truly surprised many people... He says nice words, but in the evening, he bombs everyone, and there is a little problem. I don't like it."

When asked if his anticipated announcement regarding new sanctions on Russia would relate to this, Trump replied, "We'll see what happens tomorrow." The decision to provide Patriots indicates a notable change in Trump's approach, which had focused on persuading Putin to come to the negotiating table.

Trump also confirmed an upcoming meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, where discussions are expected to continue on coordinating aid to Ukraine and broader regional security issues.
