Fraudster Arrested for Military Service Scam
In Odessa, law enforcement officials arrested a fraudster who sought to deceive a military conscript out of money. The perpetrator used manipulation tactics to achieve his goal. The case will be handled by the court.
Officers from the Odessa Department of Internal Security in collaboration with investigators from the Main Directorate of the National Police of Odessa exposed a 33-year-old resident involved in illegal schemes. It turned out that this was not his first offense.
Despite having a criminal record for fraud and current charges of abuse of power, the individual decided to continue his criminal activities. He offered a man with military exemption documents valid until 2026 to remove him from the military register for health reasons in exchange for $15,000.
To establish credibility, the fraudster posed as a lawyer, claiming to have connections with officials he purported to negotiate with.
To ensure the man would not refuse cooperation, the fraudster resorted to intimidation, threatening to rescind the military exemption and report him as a wanted person. At the same time, he emphasized that the opportunity to complete the transaction was available only now, as the next chance would not arise for at least six months.
Immediately after receiving the money, officers from the Internal Security Department and investigators from the Odessa police arrested the fraudster under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He has already been notified of suspicion under Article 369-2 (Abuse of Influence) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which provides for up to 8 years of imprisonment.
The procedural oversight is being conducted by the Odessa Regional Prosecutor's Office.
