New GMO Registration Standards in Ukraine

18 April 2025

The Cabinet of Ministers has adopted new regulations for managing the State Register of Genetically Modified Organisms, aimed at improving consumer safety.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food.

The new register will act as a single state information system for accounting, monitoring, and storing data on all GMOs registered in Ukraine.

The ministry explained that implementing such a register is a necessary step to ensure transparency in biotechnology, enhance consumer safety, and meet Ukraine's obligations under the Association Agreement with the EU.

Moreover, this resolution aligns Ukrainian legislation with EU acts regarding GMO management, specifically Directive 2001/18/EC on the deliberate release of genetically modified organisms into the environment.

This will facilitate the creation of a regulated accounting and control system comparable to the European one, which will reduce risks to human health and the environment.

The resolution will come into effect in September 2026, concurrently with new legislation regulating genetic engineering activities in Ukraine.
