New Regulations for Air Quality Information in Ukraine

A new regulation has been established in Ukraine to inform the public about air quality. This document outlines the list of pollutants and their levels for calculating air quality indices.

The respective order (No. 590 dated March 24, 2025) has been registered with the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, as reported by the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

"This step is crucial for ensuring the public’s access to information about air quality in Ukraine in a user-friendly format", – noted the ministry.

The document stipulates:

• the list of pollutants for determining the quality index;
• the concentration ranges of these pollutants;
• color and text indicators for the index;
• public recommendations.

The quality index for any pollutant can be classified as:

• "Very Poor";
• "Poor";
• "Unsatisfactory";
• "Satisfactory";
• "Acceptable";
• "Good".

"The concentration ranges for the quality index have been defined based on standard values for each pollutant, considering WHO recommendations and the European air quality index.

The regulation was developed in accordance with the European air quality index published on the official page of the European Environmental Agency", – explained the Ministry.

It is also worth noting that throughout February, Kyiv experienced systematic deterioration in air quality. Residents were advised to stay indoors and keep windows closed.

Subsequently, it became known that weather conditions, particularly the lack of precipitation and low wind speeds, contributed to the accumulation of pollutants in the air.
