05 April 2025

Law enforcement authorities apprehended an individual involved in the illegal acquisition of a vehicle in the Podilskyi district. The suspect stole a car because he didn't want to walk home. Charges have been filed against him, and a preventive measure has been established. He faces imprisonment and asset confiscation.

The incident occurred in a village within the Zelenohirsk community. A local resident reported to the police that an unknown person had stolen his VAZ car from his yard at night.

"The police located the vehicle on the outskirts of the village near the crime scene, and through initial investigative measures, they quickly identified and detained the suspect at his residence. He turned out to be a 26-year-old man from the Balt community, previously convicted of property crimes", - stated the police report.

The suspect explained to the police that upon seeing an unlocked car on someone else's property, he decided to drive it home. He managed to start the engine by connecting the ignition wires, but he couldn't drive far as the vehicle broke down, leading him to abandon it on the village outskirts and flee the scene.

"We apprehended the suspect in accordance with legal procedures. We have gathered sufficient evidence and charged him with a criminal offense under part 2 of article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. This concerns the illegal acquisition of a vehicle, committed repeatedly. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to eight years with or without the confiscation of property. Upon our request, the court selected a preventive measure in the form of detention. We also ordered a forensic examination to determine the car's value and the damages incurred by the victim", - said Oleg Sytnyk, head of police department No. 1 of the Podilskyi police station.
