New Energy Initiatives in Odesa
The first phase of the distributed generation system based on gas engine cogeneration units has commenced in Odesa.
This initiative is being carried out in collaboration with UNDP and representatives from the embassies of Japan, Norway, and Sweden as part of the decentralization of the city's energy system.
The first cogeneration unit has already been installed at an Odesa boiler house. According to Odesa's Deputy Mayor Hanna Pozdnyakova, these units are crucial for heating supply due to their independence from central energy systems and high energy efficiency. They can be activated quickly, ensuring that heating can be restored promptly.
During the ceremony for the transfer of the gas engine power plant to the municipal enterprise “Heating of the City of Odesa,” notable attendees included: UNDP Ukraine’s permanent representative Mr. Yako Silje, the Deputy Head of the Norwegian Embassy mission Mr. Jan Flete, Japanese Ambassador Mr. Masashi Nakagome (via video), Swedish Ambassador Mr. Martin Oberg, and Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Energy Mykola Kolysnyk (also via video), as well as UNDP’s Green Energy Recovery Program Director Yulia Rybak.
“I am particularly grateful to our partners from Yokohama with whom I signed a Memorandum in March 2023, allowing Odesa to receive the necessary equipment. Thanks to the support from Japan, Norway, and Sweden, we not only installed the first unit but also prepared sites for the next ones. We will now be able to provide electricity to heating, water supply, and wastewater facilities,” said Hennadiy Trukhanov.
This project will help Odesa become more resilient to energy challenges faced during previous blackouts.
By the end of the year, the delivery of two more such units is expected. Preparatory work for their installation has already been completed.
