Increase in Cash Circulation in Ukraine

21 January 2026

In 2025, the total amount of cash in circulation in Ukraine grew by 12.6% (or 103.9 billion hryvnias), reaching 926.3 billion hryvnias as of January 1, 2026. This was reported by the National Bank of Ukraine.

The growth rate of cash in circulation in 2025 was higher than in 2024, when the increase was 7.6%.

"Key factors contributing to this included increases in wages, social payments, and consumer demand for goods and services, along with a decrease in inflation. Additionally, risks associated with Russian aggression, including attacks on energy infrastructure, are prompting people to accumulate cash," the NBU noted.

According to the National Bank, there are 2.6 billion banknotes in circulation totaling 916.9 billion hryvnias, as well as 15.2 billion coins (excluding commemorative and investment coins) worth 9.3 billion hryvnias.

At the beginning of the year, each resident of Ukraine had: 64 banknotes and 193 change and circulating coins (as of January 1, 2025 – 63 and 186 respectively).

Among banknotes, the most common is the 500 hryvnia note, while the least common is the 50 hryvnia note (26% and 4.6% of the total number of banknotes in circulation, respectively).

In terms of coins, circulating and change coins are present. The circulating coins come in four denominations: 1, 2, 5, and 10 hryvnias. The most common in circulation are the 1 hryvnia coins, while the least common are the 10 hryvnia coins (4.6% and 2.3% respectively). The NBU reminds that from October 1, 2025, a gradual withdrawal of 10 kopeck coins will begin.

During 2025, 3.1 million coins of this denomination were withdrawn. Currently, the share of these coins in total circulation at the beginning of the year stands at 27.2%.

There remains a stable demand for 50 kopeck change coins, particularly from the trade and service sectors. Their share of the total in circulation is 9.1%.

In 2025, the highest growth in coin volumes was seen in the 5 and 10 hryvnia coins, with their numbers increasing by 21% and 29% respectively compared to the beginning of the year.

The number of 25 kopeck coins decreased by 0.1% due to their withdrawal from circulation.

For the first time in several years, the number of 100 and 50 hryvnia banknotes increased in 2025 (by 4.5% and 6.3% respectively compared to the beginning of the year).

Conversely, the most significant decline among banknotes occurred with the 200 hryvnia notes, whose quantity decreased by 17.6% last year due to their replacement by 1000 hryvnia notes and the gradual withdrawal of older series from circulation.

There was also a significant reduction in the number of 10 and 5 hryvnia banknotes (by 10% and 8% respectively), as they are gradually being replaced by corresponding coins.
