Cultural Milestone in Odesa: A New Take on «Shchedryk»

A significant cultural event took place in Odesa — during a Christmas concert, a fresh interpretation of the legendary «Shchedryk» was presented, performed by local choirs. The audience witnessed the premiere of a music video for the piece, filmed under the circumstances of war.

«Shchedryk» is a globally recognized composition by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych, one of the most iconic symbols of Ukrainian music worldwide. This time, the piece was performed in a new format — as a collaborative effort of Odesa's choral groups and creative individuals.

The idea for this project originated in Odesa's music schools among the city's choral ensembles. The initiative involved the Odesa College of Arts and various musicians who came together to reinterpret this world-famous piece while showcasing contemporary Odesa culture.

The shooting of the music video occurred under challenging conditions — during brief lulls between air raid alerts, symbolizing the resilience of the city and its cultural community.

Deputy Head of the Odesa Military Administration, Olha Lozova, emphasized the project's significance for the city:

«Such initiatives are not just about art. They represent our identity, our ability to express ourselves and create, even in the most difficult times. «Shchedryk» performed by Odesans is the voice of the city heard across the world».

Project coordinator Olena Pavlova noted that the main goal was to preserve sincerity and vibrant emotion:

«We wanted Odesa to resonate in a new, modern way. In every note — Odesa, in every voice — our unity and belief in culture as a force that unites».
