SpaceX Shuts Down Starlink Devices in Myanmar Amid Fraud Concerns

SpaceX has disabled more than 2500 Starlink devices in Myanmar that were being used by fraudulent networks for cyberattacks and online scams. According to CNN, the decision comes after over a year of U.S. concerns regarding the use of Starlink by criminal groups in Myanmar.
Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Business Operations for Starlink at SpaceX, stated that the company monitors violations across all markets where Starlink operates and takes appropriate action when breaches are detected.
"In rare cases where we find violations, we collaborate with law enforcement agencies worldwide," she noted.
In Myanmar, SpaceX independently identified and blocked over 2500 Starlink kits near suspected fraud centers.
Dreyer did not specify the date of the disconnections, but the announcement followed the Myanmar military's claim that they discovered 30 Starlink kits during a raid on one of the fraudulent complexes.
A recent report from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute highlighted that there are about 30 large complexes along the Myanmar-Thailand border, specifically built for fraudulent activities yielding billions annually, affecting even American citizens.
Workers in these fraud centers are often lured by promises of well-paying jobs or fall victim to human trafficking. They are regularly held against their will and forced to engage in online fraud schemes in well-guarded facilities, where abuse and torture are commonplace, as reported by CNN.
