The Future of e-Hryvnia: New Challenges and Prospects
The development of the e-hryvnia is ongoing, but its implementation by 2027 remains uncertain.
According to Forbes Ukraine, Alexei Shaban, Deputy Head of the National Bank of Ukraine, states that launching digital currency requires substantial financial resources, and spending them during wartime raises ethical concerns.
The regulator plans to initiate a pilot project that will allow testing the digital currency not only within the NBU but also in real-world conditions - for payments, transfers, and state programs. However, the cost of the pilot is high, and the technical requirements are complex.
"We are making progress, but I cannot say that 2027 will be the year of e-hryvnia's implementation," remarked Deputy Head of the NBU Alexei Shaban.
It’s worth noting that the regulator presented the e-hryvnia concept project as digital money in November 2022. The primary purpose of the electronic hryvnia is to effectively perform all the functions of money, complementing cash and non-cash forms of the hryvnia. The use of e-hryvnia should be convenient and accessible to all segments of the population, legal entities, state bodies, banks, and non-bank financial institutions.
In October 2022, the State Enterprise "Ukrainian Institute of Intellectual Property" (UKRPATENT) registered the trademark "e-hryvnia" and e-hryvnia, owned by the NBU.
