Day of Remembrance for Ukraine's Defenders

29 August 2025

Every year on August 29, Ukraine remembers the heroes who gave their lives in the fight for freedom and sovereignty of our nation.

This day was established by the Presidential Decree of Ukraine on August 23, 2019, to honor the courage of servicemen and volunteers who sacrificed their lives for their Motherland.

The date of August 29 is not coincidental, as it marks the day in 2014 during the Ilovaisk operation when Ukrainian forces made a stand against Russian troops, showcasing immense bravery from our soldiers and volunteers, resulting in many Ukrainian defenders losing their lives.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, emphasized that the memory of fallen warriors obliges us to be strong in defending our homeland.

Syrskyi noted that since 2014, Russian aggression has continued to claim the lives of Ukrainians, and each loss brings profound pain to families and friends.

He also stressed that the sacrifice of every soldier is a crucial part of our independence and freedom. The memory of heroes reminds us of this cost and compels us to fight for our country. Eternal glory and memory to all who died for Ukraine!

Today, Ukraine honors those who gave their lives for the freedom of the state. Minister of Defense Denys Shmyhal highlighted that thanks to these heroes, Ukraine continues to live.

“With gratitude, we remember the defenders of Ukraine who stopped the enemy at the cost of their own lives. They are true heroes, examples of strength and loyalty,” Shmyhal remarked.

The symbol of this day is the sunflower, which grows on the battlefields near Ilovaisk, where in 2014 our soldiers stood up to protect their homeland.

“We continue to fight for our victory and independence. We remember. We fight. We will win!” - the minister concluded.
