Security Update: Google Urges Gmail Users to Enhance Protection
Google is urging its 2.5 billion Gmail users to update their passwords and enhance account security after a series of significant hacking incidents, as reported by the New York Post.
The company suggests that users remain vigilant about suspicious activities and configure additional security methods, including two-factor authentication if not already activated.
Hackers typically gain access to accounts through phishing emails containing fake login pages or by tricking users into providing two-factor authentication codes. While many users have strong passwords, only one-third regularly update them.
Google also recommends boosting security following the breach of Salesforce's database, where sensitive data, including contacts from small and medium enterprises, was stolen. According to Google, the group ShinyHunters, known since 2020 for high-profile attacks (AT&T, Microsoft, Santander, Ticketmaster), may be planning new attacks and blackmailing victims through a data leak site.
The company emphasizes that new attack methods are aimed at increasing pressure on victims, particularly those affected by recent incidents involving Salesforce.
All users impacted by the latest attack have received an email notification from Google. The company urges users to regularly check account activity, avoid suspicious links, and report any unusual actions.
