Conservation of the European Roller in the Lower Dniester National Park

27 July 2025

The Lower Dniester National Park is home to the endangered European Roller (Coracias garrulus), a stunning bird with vibrant blue feathers. Unfortunately, this species is on the brink of extinction due to deforestation, urban development along nesting areas, pesticide use, and changes in its habitat, leaving these rare birds without shelter and food.

This information has been shared on the National Park's official page.

Despite the challenges, it is still possible to encounter Rollers in the national park in Odesa, as they can be seen flying over the Karagol Bay.
“Perhaps you will be fortunate enough to spot one — a symbol of hope and strength in these difficult times,” the park’s page states.

The European Roller is protected under the Red Book of Ukraine, as well as the Bern and Bonn conventions, and is governed by EU directives.
