Extraordinary Inhabitants of Ukrainian Forests

18 July 2025

Among the unique representatives of our country's fauna, particularly in the forests, one can encounter an impressive beetle, recognized as the largest in Europe.

At the Memorial of the Heroic Defense of Odessa, a rare stag beetle (Lucanus cervus), listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, was documented.

This information was released by the press service of the State Ecological Inspection of the Southwestern region.

This species can grow up to 8 cm in length, and its massive jaw resembles antlers, making it easily recognizable. Despite its fearsome appearance, the stag beetle poses no danger to humans.

In ecosystems, these beetles play a crucial role in decomposing wood, aiding the renewal of forest ecosystems. Their presence in large parks, especially those where natural forest elements are preserved, indicates a healthy natural environment.

The legislation of Ukraine protects the stag beetle, making its destruction or removal from the wild strictly prohibited.

Should you encounter this rare species, please follow these guidelines:

  • Do not attempt to touch the beetle;
  • Do not try to move it — allow it to continue its natural life cycle.

Preserving biodiversity is not just about protecting wildlife but also ensuring harmony between humans and nature. Every encounter with rare species reaffirms the success of conservation efforts.
