An Amazing Phenomenon on the Black Sea Coast

Along the coast of the Black Sea, in the National Nature Park «Tuzlovski Limans», one can observe thousands of swimming crabs that have been washed onto the sand by marine waves. This includes many females carrying eggs.

Ecologist Ivan Rusev reported this on his Facebook page.

According to the scientist, this occurrence resulted from the upwelling of cold water from the depths of the sea, a phenomenon linked to temperature changes and wind currents that bring cold layers to the surface. This very water mass «washed» the crabs ashore.

Park staff and concerned locals have been trying to save as many live crabs as possible by returning them to the water.

These crabs are known to be excellent swimmers. Their fourth pair of legs is adapted to the aquatic environment and resembles paddles. Typically, they inhabit depths of hundreds or even thousands of meters.
