Exciting Archaeological Discoveries in Odesa Region

06 June 2025

In the Odesa region, near the village of Orlivka in the Reni community, an archaeological expedition from K.D. Ushynskyi University has begun its work. The research is taking place at the necropolis known as «Kamiana Hora», located on the banks of the Lower Danube.

According to the university's rector, Andrii Krasnozhon, this area has served as a crucial crossing point between the Great Eurasian Steppe and the Balkans for over five thousand years. Various peoples, including the Cimmerians, Scythians, Sarmatians, Romans, Goths, Huns, and Bulgarians, traversed this land, as did the armies of the Persian king Darius and the Macedonian general Zopyrion.

“In archaeological terms, this site can be equated with a tectonic fault between two civilizational plates of the East and West. It is a place of incredible concentration of extraordinary treasures and archaeological strata from all times and cultures…”, stated the rector.

Professor Ihor Bruyako, a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute, has been leading these archaeological excavations for over 20 years.

This season marks the first time since the war began that history students and volunteers from other faculties have rejoined the research efforts.

“I wish you sensational discoveries! Touch the mysteries and breathe in freedom,” added Krasnozhon.
