Renaming Localities in Odesa Region

08 May 2025

The issue of renaming villages in the Odesa region, particularly in the Arcyz community, is currently under discussion in Ukraine. Local residents expressed a desire to change the names to enhance their locality's identity.

On May 5, a draft resolution was registered in the Ukrainian parliament proposing to change the names of nineteen localities, including two in the Odesa region.

These changes were initiated by the Arcyz City Council. The residents of Holmske are advocating to restore its historical name, Selyohlo, which was used until the Soviet renaming in 1946.

Additionally, the settlement of Novokholmske is set to be renamed Aliyahu, as per the community's wishes, due to the nearby railway station that bore the same name.
