Empowering Women: A Conference in Odessa

05 November 2024

Simultaneously with the Ukrainian Women's Congress in Kyiv, the Ukrainian Women's Conference «The Women's Movement Acts in All Women» is taking place in Odessa, dedicated to the 140th anniversary of the women's movement in Ukraine.

Odessa's mayor, Gennady Trukhanov, welcomed the attendees, emphasizing the significant role of women in wartime, politics, and social life. He also highlighted their importance in preserving the city's traditions and culture, expressing gratitude for their contributions.

Sabin Fraser Gunesh, the head of UN Women Ukraine, spoke about the support for the movement from the United Nations and the desire to enhance cooperation:

"We know that women in Ukraine are free in their actions. For instance, last year, women established every second new business in the country. They play incredible roles, stepping in for men who are fighting at the front, and approximately 60,000 women are currently serving in the security and defense forces."

The event brought together historians, activists, military personnel, representatives of international organizations, economists, and gender specialists.

Key topics of the conference included the historical context of the women's movement in Ukraine and Odessa, the challenges and achievements of women in contemporary society, as well as leadership and the reconstruction of Ukraine after the war.
