Innovative Vaccination Program for Children in Odesa

06 November 2024

In Odesa, the implementation of an innovative vaccination program for children against the human papillomavirus (HPV) is ongoing, funded by the city budget. This vaccination effectively prevents oncological and other reproductive system diseases in adulthood.

The HPV vaccine is most effective for children aged 9 to 14, before they become sexually active. During a vaccination conference, Levon Nikogosyan, Director of the Odesa City Council Health Department, reported that since October 2023, 1590 children have been vaccinated against HPV, with 858 completing the full course of two doses. By the end of the year, approximately 1500 more vaccinations are planned.

Currently, Odesa is the only city in Ukraine providing free HPV vaccinations for both girls and boys.

“Vaccination is one of humanity's brilliant inventions that has saved many lives. I urge all parents to take responsibility for their children's health and ensure timely vaccinations,” emphasized Levon Nikogosyan.

A vaccination school took place on November 6, 2024, supported by the Odesa City Council Health Department and the Odesa Regional Family Medicine Association. The event involved pediatricians, family doctors, therapists, immunologists, allergists, infectious disease specialists, and other professionals.

Medical professionals highlighted the importance of timely routine vaccinations in preventing outbreaks of infectious diseases and ensuring a favorable epidemiological situation in Odesa and across Ukraine.

Additional vaccinations not included in the National Vaccination Calendar but recommended, such as against pneumococcal infection, were also discussed. Special attention was given to effective communication between healthcare workers and parents and addressing common vaccination questions.
