OpenAI and Anthropic's New Measures for Teen Protection

22 December 2025

OpenAI and Anthropic are implementing new initiatives aimed at safeguarding teenagers from potential risks associated with their artificial intelligence models. This decision comes amid criticism of outdated age verification methods that often prove ineffective.
OpenAI has announced updates to the ChatGPT model specification focused on ensuring the safety of younger users. The new policy emphasizes the importance of supporting offline communication and adopting a friendly approach towards teenagers, as safety is a priority even if it conflicts with other goals.
These changes reflect a shift away from an adult-centric communication style, focusing instead on younger users. Such measures are a response to unfortunate instances where interactions with chatbots have led to tragic outcomes, including suicides.
Anthropic has also prohibited minors from accessing the Claude model. Now, only individuals aged 18 and older can register. The company is deploying algorithms to detect users' ages in conversations and block accounts belonging to younger users.
Previously, Google had introduced similar tools, but their effectiveness was questioned due to issues with false blocks, which complicated content access for adult users.
Experts emphasize that the new measures from OpenAI and Anthropic could significantly enhance the protection of teenagers from the adverse effects of interacting with artificial intelligence, though their effectiveness still requires practical verification.
