The Impact of AI on Google News Headlines

03 December 2025

Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly prominent in Google services, and in some instances, its application raises questions. Journalists from The Verge have reported that Google has started experimenting with replacing article titles in the Google Discover feed with automatically generated versions that do not always match the content.

Some of these rewritten headlines have turned out to be inaccurate or even misleading. For instance, Discover displayed an Ars Technica article under the title "Steam Machine price revealed," while the original article only discussed the device's design without revealing any pricing information. Another outlet, Engadget, also noted a new format where original headlines were accompanied by generated summaries.

Google labels these elements as "Generated with AI, which can make mistakes," but this has not stopped users from criticizing the feature for its inaccuracies and the risk of misinformation.

Google representative Mallory DeLeon informed The Verge that this is a "small UI experiment" for a portion of Discover users. She mentioned that the goal is to "change the presentation of headlines to make it easier to get acquainted with the topic before transitioning to other materials."

Despite this, the experiment is causing concern among online media outlets, with which Google has had conflicts in the past regarding the use of their content in search and news services. Publishers have repeatedly demanded compensation for displaying their content, while Google has responded by limiting access to their materials in search.

Simultaneously, Google continues to integrate AI more aggressively into its core search. Google Search VP Robbie Stein stated that the company is testing the combination of AI Mode and AI Overviews on a single screen in mobile search, making AI suggestions even more noticeable and influential in the results.
