Group Chats in ChatGPT: A New Era of Communication

21 November 2025

OpenAI has announced the rollout of group chat functionality in ChatGPT, which has become available after testing in several countries.
After a week of trials in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan, the feature will soon be accessible to all users, regardless of their subscription plan (Free, Go, Plus, or Pro).
This feature allows users to create groups and invite others via a special link. Up to 20 participants can join a chat. Users can join with an existing ChatGPT account or create a new one. Participants can collaboratively ask questions to ChatGPT and exchange messages.
OpenAI clarified that the content of group chats is not stored in ChatGPT's memory. Each participant has the ability to remove others from the chat, except for the creator.
Previously, the company stated that group chats in ChatGPT would operate on the basis of GPT-5.1 Auto — an innovative system that determines the best model to use based on the query and the user's subscription plan.
Additionally, OpenAI recently introduced a new language model, GPT-5.1, featuring two modes — Instant and Thinking. This update aims to enhance the model's understanding of instructions and personality settings.
