Meta Expands Solar Energy Commitment for Data Centers

This week, Meta announced the signing of contracts for nearly 1 gigawatt of solar energy, marking a significant step in fulfilling the increasing demands of its computing facilities. So far, the company has secured over 3 GW of solar resources, according to TechCrunch.

Solar energy has become a primary source for tech firms due to its relatively low cost and rapid deployment. This makes it an optimal choice amid the rising number of data centers.

On October 27, Meta announced a deal to procure 600 megawatts of energy from a large solar power plant located in Texas, set to be operational by 2027. While it won't be directly linked to the company’s data centers, the generated energy will feed into the local grid, offsetting the consumption of these facilities.

By October 30, the company reported two contracts in Louisiana, involving the purchase of environmental attributes amounting to 385 megawatts. These projects are expected to complete in two years, focusing on acquiring certificates that allow the company to claim the use of renewable “green” energy.

These certificates, known as Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs), emerged years ago when renewable energy was more expensive than traditional sources. They enabled companies to cover additional costs for renewable energy and encouraged the development of similar projects.

However, the significant reduction in solar and wind generation costs raises questions about the actual impact of EACs on the creation of new renewable capacities.

Experts emphasize that if companies aim to offset rising electricity consumption driven by AI advancements, they should invest in building new renewable plants rather than merely purchasing certificates.
