Meta Enters the Robotics Market with Ambitious Plans

Meta is gearing up to enter the robotics market, aiming to become the "Android for robots". According to reports, the company is developing its own robot called Metabot, focusing not on hardware but on creating a software platform that can be licensed by other manufacturers.

Andrew Bosworth, Meta's CTO, stated that software is the "bottleneck" in robotics development. The company has assembled a team led by former Cruise CEO Mark Whitten and resources from Superintelligence Labs to develop a so-called "world model". This model is expected to enable robots to simulate complex physical actions, starting with hand movement animations and progressing to multi-step tasks.

As early as 2025, Meta was considering the idea of creating a robot for household chores such as cleaning or folding laundry, but currently, this remains in the early research phase.

Meta is not alone in envisioning a future with home robots. Apple is working on a device with a robotic arm and screen, while Tesla regularly showcases its humanoid Optimus, albeit in controlled conditions.

If the strategy succeeds, Meta could become a key provider of the "operating system" for robots, similar to how Google was for smartphones. However, Google is also making strides, with its research unit DeepMind consistently introducing new advancements in robotics. Recently, researchers trained their robots to "google" and share knowledge with one another.
