Safety in Minefields: Innovative Approaches to Mine Awareness

12 September 2025

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine and GSC Game World have launched a collaborative project aimed at raising awareness about safety rules in mine-affected areas, utilizing the universe of the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.

In the video created based on the game, the main character Skif illustrates essential safety recommendations:

  • Avoid approaching suspicious objects
  • Do not touch them
  • Return the same way you came
  • Call 101

According to the State Emergency Service, approximately 23% of Ukraine's territory remains hazardous due to mines and unexploded ordnance, and the demining process will take decades. Despite awareness of the risks, over half of teenagers act recklessly, particularly boys aged 14–17 who tend to underestimate danger.

To convey important messages in an understandable format, the State Emergency Service, in collaboration with GSC Game World, integrated the theme of mine threats into a familiar virtual space for gamers. According to the developers, this project aims to save lives by replacing dry lectures with emotional immersion.
