Google Maintains Support for Shortened URLs
Google has decided to continue supporting all shortened URLs goo.gl created using the Google URL Shortener service, contrary to earlier announcements.
On August 1, the company announced that the links would remain active without any notifications of impending deactivation. Google points out that many of these links are embedded in documents, videos, and posts, prompting the change in decision based on the feedback received.
In July of last year, Google announced plans to deactivate all goo.gl links by August 25, 2025, citing a decrease in their activity. According to the company, over 99% of such addresses had no clicks recently.
However, the company is now revising its plans – only those links that have had no activity since the end of 2024 will be deactivated. Links that still receive clicks will remain available.
