OpenAI Discontinues Indexing Public ChatGPT Dialogs

01 August 2025

OpenAI has decided to halt the indexing of public ChatGPT conversations by search engines following a wave of criticism regarding data privacy. This announcement was made by OpenAI's chief security officer, Dain Staki, on the social media platform X.

Previously, there was a feature that allowed search engines to index conversations created by users in public mode. Examples quickly circulated on social media where individuals allegedly confessed to legal violations or disclosed sensitive information. Such data could appear in Google search results if they were shared via the public chat sharing feature.

According to Staki, starting from August 2, 2025, the indexing of such pages will be prohibited. OpenAI is also exploring additional measures to restrict access to such materials in cases where users accidentally made them public.

The public chat sharing feature was introduced in 2023 as a way to share interesting or educational interaction examples with ChatGPT. However, the company did not anticipate the extent to which these public links could spread or be discovered by search engines.

It is worth noting that OpenAI recently added a new feature to ChatGPT — Study Mode, which allows users to solve tasks step by step.
