ChatGPT Agent: Elevating Task Automation to New Heights
OpenAI has introduced a new feature called ChatGPT Agent, a virtual assistant capable of automating various tasks on a computer. This feature is already available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Team users, with a rollout for corporate accounts expected by the end of summer.
Unlike conventional chatbots, the Agent can manage calendars, create presentations, process documents, make online purchases, schedule meetings, and perform everyday tasks like restaurant bookings. It operates in a virtual environment equipped with a browser, terminal, and file system, enabling it to autonomously fulfill requests.
This functionality is based on a new model that can interact with several tools simultaneously. The development team has merged efforts from the Deep Research and Operator projects, but unlike the latter, the Agent not only provides consultation but also performs actions independently in a virtual environment. The Operator, on the other hand, necessitates human involvement in task execution.
The ChatGPT Agent can:
- Analyze calendars and organize events;
- Create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations;
- Work with user files;
- Conduct searches and make bookings through third-party services;
- Generate reports and process web data.
Before executing irreversible actions, such as sending emails or placing orders, the tool requires confirmation. Some functionalities, including transactions, are temporarily restricted, and certain websites are accessible only in watch mode.
In the European Economic Area and Switzerland, this feature is currently unavailable. OpenAI has not announced specific timelines for launch in these regions.
This new tool has emerged amidst increasing competition in the AI agent sector. Companies like Google, Meta, Amazon, Anthropic, and startups such as Klarna are already rolling out similar solutions. According to OpenAI, the ChatGPT Agent represents a step towards an AI model that not only advises but also performs real-world tasks.
