At the 2025 Wimbledon tournament, a groundbreaking change occurred with the complete removal of line judges, replaced by the Hawk-Eye Live system powered by artificial intelligence. However, despite claims of accuracy, this innovation sparked significant criticism from players and fans alike, as reported by TechRadar.

British tennis stars Jack Draper and Emma Raducanu publicly expressed doubts about the system's decision-making after controversial moments during their matches. During her game, Yue Yuan requested the umpire to increase the volume of announcements, which were deemed insufficiently clear for the athletes.

In the match between Sonya Kartal and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the system malfunctioned entirely for one game due to an operator error. Following this incident, the All England Club issued an apology, acknowledging a server-side glitch.

The shift from human judges to algorithms also affected the social aspect of the tournament, with over 300 umpires losing their jobs this year. Some even protested outside the club with placards.

Despite technological advancements, not all tournaments are following Wimbledon's lead; for instance, Roland-Garros still employs human referees. Critics of the new system argue that the inability to appeal AI decisions undermines the balance between accuracy and fairness.
