Samsung Unveils New OLED Panel for XR Devices

16 May 2025

Samsung Display, a leading global manufacturer of displays, has announced an innovative OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) panel tailored for augmented reality (XR) headsets. This unveiling took place at the Society for Information Display 2025, according to SamMobile.

The new 1.4-inch panel boasts an astonishing resolution of 5000 ppi, surpassing even the best 8K televisions. The maximum brightness of the display reaches 15,000 nits, with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The panel's color gamut covers 99% of DCI-P3, delivering vibrant and lifelike images.

Additionally, Samsung showcased a brighter RGB OLEDoS display with a resolution of 4200 ppi and a record brightness of 20,000 nits. This is the most powerful RGB OLEDoS panel from the company to date, significantly outperforming prior models: in 2024, peak brightness was 5000 nits, and at CES 2025, it was 10,000 nits.

The OLEDoS technology differs by depositing organic materials directly onto a silicon substrate rather than glass. This allows for significantly smaller pixel sizes down to tens of micrometers, enabling a vast number of pixels to fit into a small area, making panels with a diagonal of less than 2 inches achieve resolutions that exceed 8K televisions.

OLED-on-Silicon panels are used in augmented, mixed, virtual, and extended reality headsets. There are two types of OLEDoS panels: those with white OLED backlighting and RGB filters, and those with separate RGB subpixels that provide higher brightness and color accuracy.

Unfortunately, it is currently unclear when the new Samsung OLEDoS panels will be available in devices.
