Exhibition Honoring Matthieu Chazal in Odesa
The «#ARTODESSA» gallery at the Summer Theater of the City Garden is excited to announce the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the memory of Matthieu Chazal (1975–2024), a talented French photographer who devoted his art to discovering beauty at the intersection of cultures.
Matthieu first visited Odesa in 2011, and since then, his love for the city has only deepened, especially after the onset of the war in Ukraine starting March 2022. Together, we dreamed of creating a house of photography in Odesa, and although Matthieu is no longer with us, his dream lives on.
Matthieu Chazal (1975 – 2024) was an outstanding French photographer and award-winning artist who documented life at the fault lines between East and West. An avid traveler, he explored the cultural diversity from the Balkans to the Caucasus, covering countries from Greece to Armenia and Ukraine. His works portray not only the tragedies of war but also the simple joys of life: soldiers resting between battles, people celebrating at markets and weddings. War is present in his photographs only as a hint: a ruined building or a damaged object, while life remains in the spotlight, highlighted by its fragility.
We invite you to the grand opening: April 22 at 5:00 PM.
The event will feature Levantine music performed by Dmytro Zemskyi, creating a joyful atmosphere that Matthieu would have appreciated.
