3D Modeling Techniques for Museum Research
Researchers from the «Archaica» laboratory have completed the creation of a 3D model of the Odessa Archaeological Museum using numerous scans and photographs. The model captures the current state of the object, opening new avenues for future research. This was reported on their blog.
During the project, the team conducted 70 scans and took about 1,500 pictures. The main challenge was scanning the roof, as the use of drones was restricted due to military actions, and there were no tall buildings nearby.
As a result, specialists decided to use a combined approach. Some photos were taken directly from the roof, while special markers were placed on the ground that appeared in frames from various angles, allowing the images to be stitched together into a single model. A total of 600 photos were used for the roof capture.
In addition to external scanning, archaeologists also performed digital imaging inside the museum. The created model is planned for use within the museum itself. The project involved six people, one scanner, and two cameras.
The 3D model captures the current condition of the building, enabling ongoing monitoring of its technical state, particularly in the context of potential damage due to military actions.
